HISTORY & CULTURE

One of the first libraries
One of the first libraries in Serbia is established in Irig in 1829, and right after the first “Serbian reading room”, where literary and cultural events are still held.

First School
Three centuries earlier, also in this region, the first school is open in the Novo Hopovo Monastery. Unique “Gusle” school was founded in Irig in 1770, known in the history for keeping its tradition and reputation for hundred years.

Fruska Gora monasteries
More than half of 17 medieval monasteries spread over Fruska Gora Mountain belong to Irig municipality, representing the pillars of culture, tradition, education, humanity and religion. Approaching from any side to Fruska Gora, monasteries Krusedol, Hopovo, Vrdnicka Ravanica, Velika and Mala Remeta, Grgeteg, Staro Hopovo and Jazak, will unobtrusively get on your way, and then mesmerize you with dignity and piece the moment you step on their ground.

Monuments of culture and history
Savina Memorial water fountain spring, located near village Neradin, is dedicated to St Nicolas in 1931, and is considered the most beautiful in the country, while Monument “Kipovi” (the Statues) between Irig and Ruma testify of successful fights of locals against the plague in the 18 century.

Paleontological site
Those interested in geology will be curious to visit geological and paleontological site Grgeteg with sediments and a very rich well-cared fossil, which is natural site with special significance in Europe.
