Irig Roads of History

Name of Irig was the first time mentioned in official documents back in the 1225. Irig was already proclaimed the Capital of Fruska Gora in the end of the 15th and beginning of the 16th century, when the first monasteries were built and surrounding settlements started to rise around them. Irig is also known as a “city of roses” due to the old technique of planting roses on each row of coot, which its winemakers still use to detect and prevent risk of quail, which sensitive roses show before the grape. In the 18th century Irig becomes significant economy, production and trade center, and the only city in Srem county with permission to organize two fairs in a year, given by Emperor Leopold in 1760. In that time, Irig had more inhabitants than Belgrade, and was a bigger consumer of fish from the Danube than any other surrounding city, which is the reason why Irig central square has the name the Fish Square.
