Irig and wine
Centuries long tradition of wine making gave generations of respectable winegrowers and producers who used the top quality grapes with carefully protected origin to create the selection of widely recognized labels, placing Irig on the international wine map.

Ancient times
History of winemaking in this region marks that Roman Emperor Markus Aurelius Probus born in Sirmium, today’s Sremska Mitrovica, planted the first wine grapes on the Fruska Gora soil.

Middle Ages
In the Middle ages the best wine was made in vineyards of Fruska Gora monasteries, while later almost every family in Srem produced its own wine. According to the old documents, wines from Fruska Gora were already exported in Chech Republic and Poland during the 15th century, and that even renowned academic Zaharije Orfelin in the 18th century wrote about them.

The modern age
Famous Irig Cellar dates back to 1929 when "Fruit and Wine Cooperative of Fruška gora" was established to organize wine production, and today 18 wine cellars proudly carry the mark of geographical indication.

Grasac, Probus, Portugiser..
Italian Riesling is grown on more than half of Fruska Gora vineyards why it’s considered the land if its origin. This terroir gives autochthone grape varieties, including Rhine Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Traminac, Muscat Ottonel, Muscat Krokan, Neoplanta, Merlot, Portugiser, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Fran, Pinot, Shiraz, Marselan, Prokupac, Probus, Tamjanika.. In recent years, profiled producers received prestigious accolades on the most prominent wine exhibitions in Europe, assuring international recognition to this wine region.

Srem delicacies
Cuisine of Srem district is rich tasty mixture with strong influence of Austrian and Hungarian gastronomy, with dominant flavors in warm slowly cooked homemade dishes. It can be best experienced in authentic ethno houses which at the same time appear as museums of old times. They offer chicken or beef stew with handmade pasta, deer stew, hot tomato soup with courgette, and widely famous walnuts or poppy seed strudels.

Modern kitchen
In modern restaurants taste Mangulica delicacies, turkey meat with homemade pastry, and veal slowly cooked under the bell, which perfectly match with local Rakia and house wine.

brandies and fruit products
Rakia coming from this region is commonly awarded for the quality due to a centuries long tradition of fruit growing. Housewives are proud of their home made marmalades prepared from plums, blueberries, wild roses and forest strawberries, with a lot of love and care.

Irig Cheeses
Absolute thrown in local gastronomy belongs to Irig chees, made by the special recipe carried through generations, which is best to find in the Irig open market or some of the traditional local gastronomy events.
